Genspace: A community biolab

February 24, 2012 By Chandra Clarke Leave a Comment

New Yorkers who want to get a better understanding of biotechnology now have access to something called Genspace, a community biolab.

Biotechnology has tremendous implications for humanity, in terms of our ability to cure diseases, grow food more efficiently, and even influence the course our our evolution. Understanding the short and long term consequences of this technology requires at least some study of it to be able to make rational, informed decisions.

Genspace provides things like a biotech crash course, a personal genotyping workshop, and a science fiction writing workshop. Have a look at their events for times and dates. They also provide support and assistance to children and adults looking to do their own research.

Don’t live in, or can’t get to New York? Why not talk to your local university to get one set up in your city? And in the meantime, why not try a little DNA extraction in your kitchen?
